Dokan

Description

The dam is located in Sulaymaniya Governorate, in Kurdustan Region at about 300 km north of Baghdad , 60 km north west of Sulaymaniya town , 220 km upstream the confluence of Lesser Zab river into Tigris River . The dam is constructed across lesser Zab river a tributary of Tigris River. The dam has a cylindrical shape with inside radius of 120 m ( from the Downstream Face ) the dam crest total length is 360 m. with maximum height of 116 m. The dam is a concrete arch dam , it was built within the period from 1954 – 1959 and commissioned in 1960

Needs

The following repair and maintenance works are required for the instrumentation at Dokan dam site ; Replacement of the three Observation wells D, E , and F outside the Dam.Cleaning and maintaining other 14 observation wells. Replacement of the Upstream Water Levels Recorder (rittmeyer) with more sophisticated one. Improvement of the seepage collection system inside the tunnels, by using proper piping network. Improvement (reconstruction) of the passage and the stairs leading to the seepage measurement pools and V notch Weirs. Replacement of three pools and V notch. Replacement of the river gauging station at the downstream side of the dam.

Objective

The dam was constructed for the following Objectives: Flood control of lesser Zab river and offer safety for the downstream areas and Tigris river . Storage Of water for Irrigation (serving an area of 37500 ha ) . Electrical power generation of 400 Mw. Development Of Tourists Projects. Development of Aquatic Life in the reservoir .
