Description
Reduce the salinity level in the Euphrates River. The Euphrates East Drain will collect drainage water in a separate channel system for ultimate discharge into the MOD. Length of Zone 3 is approximately 60.8 km; length of Zone 4 is approximately 14 km. Eastern Euphrates drain is considered one of the biggest collecters of Euphrates & Tigris main outfall drain. Eastern Euphrates drain is starting near from Al Kefal city and it is connected to Euphrates & Tigris main outfall drain at the kilometer 188,982 near Al Nasiriya in order to drain ultimately in Arab Gulf. The length of this drain is about 216 Km starting from the drainage outfall of Hilla- Kifil, ending to its outfall in the main river mouth of Tigris & Euphrates. Total area served by this project is about 1,549,240 du distributed to the projects located to the left of Euphrates River, the majority of its drainage water which flows into Euphrates river increases the salinity of area located to the south of Al Kifil city up to Al Nasiriya city. The maximum discharge of eastern Euphrates drain was 85 m3/s in July (according to a report in 2006). The primary length of Euphrates eastern drain flows along the part of Al Kifil main drain for about 93,100KM, and then along Al Shamiya eastern drain for about 92,822KM ,in this way the above two drains constitute Al Kifal main drain & Al Shamiya eastern drain . Both of these drains used for draining the water of Hilla-Kifil project& Hilla –Diwaniyah project & Diwaniyah-Shafi’iyah& part of Kifil-Shnafiyah project.
Needs
At present, drainage water from numerous irrigation projects is discharged back into the adjacent rivers, increasing their salinity. As river flows become more saline, they are less useful as source waters for irrigation and potable water supply.
Objective
Reduce the salinity level in the Euphrates River. This project aims to remove drainage salts from irrigation networks which is located within the seven projects which are limited between Euphrates River and Shatt Al Hilla, these projects include the following: Hilla-Kifil, Hilla–Diwaniyah, Kifil-Shnafiyah, Diwaniyah-Shafi’iyah, Rumaitha, Shnafiyah-Nasiriya and Muthanna projects.
