Description

The new Hindiya barrage is located of the Euphrates River close to the town of Hindiya to replace the Old Hindiya Barrage constructed between 1911-1913 to control the gravity flow into Hilla main Canal (shatt al hilla), Kifil main canal, Beni Hassan main Canal, and Hussayiniah main canals. Hindiya barrage is a concrete structure composed of the six openings controlled by radial gates each 16 m able to pass a total discharge of 2500 m3/s, the max pond level upstream the barrage is 32.55 masl. The scheme includes a Navigation Lock 150 m long and 20 m wide. And a fish ladder to facilitate the fish migration across the barrage. On the right side a hydropower station was constructed, includes 4 bulb turbines, with total discharge of 420 m3/sec and generation capacity of 15 MW. Head regulators were constructed on Both Sides the scheme was completed and commissioned in 1986 .

Needs

Qualified consultants must be employed to prepare the required monitoring instrumentation and Piezometers to be installed at each structure, and preparation of New Operation and Maintenance Manual. A new bathymetry survey is required for the river reaches upstream and downstream the the sediment accumulation within the upstream reach and the scour if any within the downstream reach, this will define the required dredging, cleaning and/ or protection works.

Objective

The scheme was constructed to control the flow and water levels in Euphrates river and diverting and regulating part the River water by gravity for irrigation via the intakes of Hilla Canal (irrigating 420000 ha), Kifil Canal (irrigating 25000 ha) both o
