Description
The MOD represents the main part of Iraq’s drainage Network. It serves a total area of 6 million donums within the middle and southern parts of Iraq. It is an open drain starts from Ishaqi Project North of Baghdad running through the Mesopotamian plain between the two rivers and ended south of Basrah and then discharge the water to the Arabian Gulf. Its total length is 565 km. Its top width varies between 46m at the start to 100 m at its end. The drain along with its structures was constructed on stages, the last stage ended in 1992.
Needs
According to the MoWR the Drain is completed and there is no need for changing the system. Operation and Maintenance are required. Opportunity to treat and re-use drainage water should be considered
Objective
Reduce the salinity level in the Tigris and Euphrates River. This project aims to collect the drainage water generated from the different irrigation projects located in the Mesopotamian plain between the two rivers; Tigris and Euphrates, and then discharge the drainage water to the Arabian Gulf in order to maintain an adequate level of salts accumulation in the projects agricultural soils.
